7 ways to spread the buzz

Posted on December 11, 2007. Filed under: Buzz, Free tips, Indian Startups | Tags: , |

Have a startup? Need to get the much needed buzz? Go ahead, choose your brand ambassador and start publishing your ads in all the media – TV, Famous Portals etc. Or read the rest of this post to find out the different free (as in free beer) options available for you.

  • Email Signatures & IM Status

Don’t forget to put your startup name in all your email signatures. Also, in your IM status. Try to be very innovative in the second case. Start with giving your website address, then try something like “Setting up hosting for my startup”, “Hurray, hiring has kicked off”, “100 beta clients and still counting …”. Of course, only your friends are going to see your messenger status. But they are a very good source for Word-of-mouth Advertising. Who knows, one of your friend might join you too!

  • Social Networks

Frankly, I don’t like social networks like myspace, orkut, facebook. But frankly where else can you find those jobless idiots looking at the profile updates and forwarding/scraping/tagging or whatever. Make sure, you update your profile with your startup related details. Create a community for your startup. Ask your team mates to be an active member too. If possible, create a buddy for your startup and manually add few members as your friend. Post videos of some events like – Birthday party of the founder, make your startup name appear as a caption text throughout the video and spread the link. Not to mention our new friend twitter. Make sure you update it regularly, no matter even if no one looks at it.

  • Blogs

Try to blog as much as you can. Hire some intern if needed. Your blog has to convey just this. Wow, this startup is really cool. These guys are really cool. Don’t put anything techy over there.

  • SEO

Have you heard of things like Backlinking. Yes spread the buzz, by posting to different forums with the email signature pointing to your own website. Using wordpress for your blog, solves nearly 50% of SEO.

  • User groups meetup, Conferences

Don’t miss any user group meetups like Java user group meetup, lug. Also some meetups like proto.in, Barcamp are very critical for startups to gain some attention. Don’t miss even a single one. Maintain a calendar. OCC (Open Coffee Club) meets are also a good option.

  • Articles and Analytics

Try to post some articles and make sure it gets digged and slashed. If possible try to get your startup crunched. This gives you a sudden increase in traffic. Be prepared for that. Have an eye on your analytics.

  • T-shirts, Mouse pads

Make your team mates wear the corporate t-shirt as much as possible. Design the t-shirt in such a way, that they could wear it even while hanging out with other friends. Although this is not a free option, I am still including it, since the cost of a t-shirt is not that high.

Know any other free option? Let us know through the comments section.
